Broad area of activity
The Gaza Strip; in the northern West Bank historically, through camp-based battalions whose capacity collapsed in 2025. No area within either is represented.
Notable history
The al-Quds Brigades have been Palestinian Islamic Jihad's armed wing since the early 1990s, answering to the movement's Secretary-General and political leadership and closely tied to Iran. In Gaza they fought alongside the Qassam Brigades through the 2023–25 war; the US National Counterterrorism Center described the group as partially degraded in February 2025, and Erik Skare (Lawfare, 23 August 2026) assessed it as weakened considerably and near-silent on the disarmament track. It voiced reservations when Hamas and other factions approved the Board of Peace disarmament document on 30 July 2026. In the West Bank, locally branded battalions — in Jenin and Tulkarm above all, often mixed with members of other factions — were the brigades' most visible presence from 2021; the Palestinian Authority's Protect the Homeland operation in Jenin camp from December 2024 and Israel's Iron Wall operation from 21 January 2025 ended their ability to operate from the camps, whose residents UNRWA still reported displaced in July 2026. Those battalions are recorded as historical.
Strengths
An organisation with its own line of support from Iran, independent of Hamas's, and a political leadership historically based outside Gaza. No strength or arsenal figure is carried.
Limitations
Its Gaza structure is known only from IDF statements and is not represented; its West Bank battalions are historical; its position on disarmament is a reservation, not a refusal on record. No independent source establishes its present command or form.

Lineage & institutional history

Formal parent institution: Palestinian Islamic Jihad (the movement's Secretary-General and political leadership).

Campaigns

Campaigns naming this organisation as a participant. The campaign record owns the relationship and grades it; this list is computed.

  • Israel's Gaza war Opposing force · Since 7 October 2023 · moderate confidence · as of 2026-10

Took part in the 7 October attack and held hostages; a smaller force fighting alongside Hamas's armed wing rather than under it.

  • The northern West Bank camps campaign Opposing force · Since 28 August 2024 · moderate confidence · as of 2025-01

Camp-based armed formations, among them the Jenin Brigade, were the stated target of both operations; they draw on several organisations, Palestinian Islamic Jihad's al-Quds Brigades prominent among them, and are not reducible to one.
