Analytical Notes

Analytical Notes

Structured explainers that connect a major development to the wider system: actors, institutions, forces, geography, economy, civil resilience, sources and confidence. They are deeper than a brief item and narrower than a full module.

Not breaking news, and not a weekly brief. A note is published when a development needs context rather than a summary. Notes do not replace the weekly module briefs, and never carry operational detail — they explain what a development means for the structure of a conflict.

Ukraine's leadership reset

Command, reform and wartime pressure after the July 2026 reshuffle

In late July 2026 President Zelensky dismissed Oleksandr Syrskyi and named Mykhailo Drapatyi as Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, part of a wider government reshuffle that had already removed the prime minister and the reformist defence minister and drawn six days of protests in Kyiv. The change is more than a personnel move: it exposes a standing tension inside the wartime state between battlefield adaptation, defence-sector reform, public trust and political control. It does not, by itself, signal collapse, guarantee battlefield improvement, or prove a political rupture.

Where this fits

The conflict modules hold the standing picture, and their developments briefs record what changed week to week. Analytical Notes sit between the two: they take a single structural development and connect it back to the system. How Vigil grades, dates and sources its claims is set out in the methodology.
