The armistice agreements draw the Green Line and the Israel–Lebanon line

Feb – Jul 1949 Essential

What happened

Israel signs General Armistice Agreements with Egypt (24 February), Lebanon (23 March), Jordan (3 April) and Syria (20 July 1949). The lines are expressly military demarcations, without prejudice to any future political settlement. The Israel–Lebanon line follows the Mandate-era boundary.

The Israel–Jordan and Israel–Egypt armistice lines became the "Green Line" that still defines what the West Bank and the Gaza Strip are, and against which settlement, the barrier and annexation measures are measured. The Israel–Lebanon line is the reference the 2000 Blue Line approximates. None of these lines is an agreed border, and the module never treats one as such.
