Turkish forces and Turkish-backed Syrian factions take the Kurdish enclave of Afrin from the YPG; a large part of its Kurdish population is displaced, and documented abuses by the factions follow — property seizures and demographic change Kurdish organisations describe as systematic, which Türkiye denies.
Operation Peace Spring and the northeast realignment
After a US pullback announcement, Turkish forces and backed factions take a border strip between Tal Abyad and Ras al-Ayn from the SDF; hundreds of thousands are temporarily displaced. The SDF strikes its first security arrangement with Damascus and Moscow, and US forces consolidate around the oil fields and the east.
