Broad area of activity
The eastern Damascus countryside — Douma and the Eastern Ghouta
Notable history
Jaysh al-Islam was the dominant faction of the Eastern Ghouta through the siege that ended with the 2018 evacuations, after which its fighters were displaced to the north and folded into the Turkish-organised Syrian National Army. The new army brought it home: the 70th Division was formed from it in 2025 and assigned to the eastern Rif Dimashq, the example analysts cite first for the regional recruitment logic — units deployed to their places of origin. Its lineage carries the Ghouta's war record, including the faction's own documented abuses, into the state's order of battle.
Strengths
A formation on ground its fighters know, among a population it once governed.
Limitations
A faction whose rule of Douma was itself contested, returned to a population that remembers it, under a state whose capital it sits beside. No strength or basing is published.
