US government reporting has described Iran as Palestinian Islamic Jihad's primary source of funding and training. PIJ has never governed Gaza or collected revenue there, and the same reporting describes it as funded externally. What has flowed to it since 2025 is not established.
Palestinian Islamic Jihad receives material support from Iran and the Levant. A directional arrangement: the two parties do not hold the same position in it. Authored once and read from both ends.

Summary
The State Department's 2018 country report on terrorism described Iran as PIJ's primary source of financial assistance and training, and its 2021 edition reported continued Iranian support to both PIJ and Hamas. Unlike Hamas, PIJ has never administered Gaza or collected revenue there. No primary source read for this record establishes what Iran has provided since 2025, after the October 2023 war in Gaza and the closure of Iran's land route through Syria in December 2024, or whether anything reaches PIJ formations in the northern West Bank. The Board of Peace roadmap requires all factions, not Hamas alone, to cease operations and decommission.
Why it matters
US reporting describes PIJ as funded principally by one external patron, and it is reached by the Gaza instruments only as one of "the factions". Whether the Iranian channel still operates bears on whether decommissioning in Gaza can be complete.
What remains unknown
- The relationship is older than 2018: validFrom is the date of the earliest US government report this record read, not the start of Iranian support.
- No primary evidence of Iranian funding routes to PIJ after 2025 was found.
- The US reports were read through mirrors of the State Department publications.
Readings the evidence also supports
- PIJ's dependence on Iran can be read as making it Iran's instrument, or as a funding relationship with an organisation that pursues its own war; no source read establishes direction, and none is asserted.
Listed because the record's own assessment is not the only one its sources permit — not as a hedge on the assessment above.
