An Israel–Hezbollah ceasefire takes effect, with Israeli forces still in southern Lebanon

19 Jun 2026 (US–Iran memorandum announced 14 Jun)

What happened

The UN Secretary-General's report S/2026/566 records a US–Iran memorandum of understanding, announced on 14 June 2026, that also stipulated a cessation of hostilities on the Lebanese front, and a Hezbollah–Israel ceasefire that came into effect on 19 June. Reuters, quoting a US official, reported that it was reached through US and Qatari mediation. Israeli forces remain in southern Lebanon behind the forward defence line.

It ended the fighting that began on 2 March without ending the Israeli presence, which is why the Trilateral Framework signed a week later is about withdrawal sequenced against disarmament rather than about a ceasefire, on which it is silent. Hezbollah is not a party to the state-to-state instruments; this ceasefire is the one arrangement that bears on its own fire. The US–Iran memorandum belongs to Iran–Gulf's record of the war.
