Oslo II divides the West Bank into Areas A, B and C

28 Sep 1995 Essential

What happened

The Israeli–Palestinian Interim Agreement, signed in Washington, divides the West Bank into Area A (Palestinian civil and security control), Area B (Palestinian civil, Israeli security control) and Area C (Israeli civil and security control), with further Israeli redeployments that were never completed. It sets up joint security and civil coordination.

Area C — roughly 60 per cent of the West Bank by commonly cited measures — remains under full Israeli control three decades on, and is where land registration, planning, demolition and settlement decisions are taken. The A/B/C map is formally in force and de facto eroded; the module records both facts.
