Lebanon's government bans Hezbollah's military activity

2 Mar 2026

What happened

In an emergency session the same day, the Lebanese cabinet decides an immediate ban on all of Hezbollah's security and military activities as unlawful, obliges it to hand its weapons to the state and confine itself to political activity, and instructs the army to implement its plan north of the Litani. Hezbollah's ministers remain in the government.

The Lebanese state declared, in its own name, that Hezbollah's military activity is outside the law — the furthest any Lebanese government has gone. Whether the ban has been enforced is not established. Parliament extended its own term to May 2028 the same month, postponing elections.
