What happened
After fighting with Fatah-aligned forces, Hamas takes control of the Gaza Strip in June 2007. The PA president dismisses the Hamas-led government and appoints a government in Ramallah; from then on the PA governs in parts of the West Bank and Hamas in Gaza.
Two Palestinian authorities, in two territories, is the governing fact the whole post-2007 system is built on: the closure of Gaza, the separate arrangements for each territory, and the 2025 plans that exclude Hamas from Gaza's governance and make the PA's return conditional on reform. No reconciliation agreement since has reunified them.
