Hamas wins the Palestinian Legislative Council election

25 Jan 2006

What happened

Hamas wins a majority of seats in the Palestinian Legislative Council and forms a government. The Quartet conditions assistance on recognition of Israel, renunciation of violence and acceptance of previous agreements, which Hamas does not accept.

It was the last Palestinian legislative election held. The split between a Hamas majority and a Fatah-led presidency that it produced became territorial in 2007, and the absence of any electoral mandate since is why the PA's succession and its repeatedly rescheduled elections — now set for September 2027 — are open questions.
