The Taiwan Strait and the median line
A hundred and thirty kilometres of shallow, rough, heavily trafficked water, and an unwritten line down the middle of it that stopped working.
A narrow, shallow, storm-prone strait carrying a large share of world shipping, with an unwritten median line that functioned as a restraint for half a century and effectively ceased to after August 2022. The water is both the principal physical constraint and the medium through which pressure is applied.
Dominant terrain
Open sea, unusually shallow for its width — much of the strait sits on continental shelf rather than deep water — and among the busiest commercial waterways in the world. Its width varies but is broadly comparable to the English Channel at four to five times over. The Penghu islands sit in the middle of it; Kinmen and Matsu lie against the mainland coast rather than the Taiwanese one.
Mobility implications
Water is a barrier of a different kind from ground: it does not slow movement, it removes the possibility of movement altogether for anything not designed to cross it. That makes the strait the single largest physical fact in the module — every question about what any force could do resolves first into a question about maritime and air movement. Commercial traffic moves through it continuously and in very large volume, which means military activity here is conducted among civilian shipping rather than in an empty space, and any interference with movement is immediately an economic event.
Seasonal constraints
Weather is a serious constraint and is publicly documented. The north-east monsoon makes autumn and winter sea states difficult for small craft; typhoon season brings periodic closure-grade conditions in summer and early autumn. The practical effect Vigil records is on routine activity and on shipping reliability. This record deliberately does not identify which periods would be more or less permissive for any operation — that framing turns weather into planning guidance, and it is exactly what a public record should not supply.
Water and natural barriers
The strait is the barrier. The median line running down it was never a treaty boundary and was never formally agreed; it was an unwritten restraint observed in practice for roughly half a century. Its erosion after August 2022 changed no physical fact and a great deal about what routine activity looks like, which is why the module treats it as terrain rather than as an event.
Urbanisation and settlement
Not applicable to the water itself, but decisive on either side of it: Taiwan's population, ports and industry are concentrated on its western coastal plain facing the strait, and the Fujian coast opposite is similarly dense. Everything in this module happens between two heavily populated shorelines.

Broad operational significance
Three effects. First, the water makes this a maritime and air problem before it is anything else, which is why the module's military content is about balance, access and sustainment rather than about ground. Second, because the strait carries a very large share of world shipping among the military activity, pressure applied here is economic whether or not that is its purpose — an interdiction and a delay are the same event to an insurer. Third, the median line's erosion demonstrates that the significant changes in this system are changes in norms rather than in positions: nothing moved, and what counts as unremarkable moved a great deal.
Observed
Military aircraft and vessels operate in and over the strait daily, reported by Taiwan's defence ministry. Median-line crossings, once individually newsworthy, became routine after August 2022. Coast guard patrolling around Kinmen began in February 2024. Commercial traffic has continued throughout at volumes that make the strait one of the world's busiest waterways.

Reported activity levels against the post-2022 baseline
Taiwan's defence ministry publishes daily figures. The trend against the new normal matters more than any single day, and 2026 reporting has described a return toward pre-2024 levels.
Coast guard rather than naval activity
Law-enforcement framing changes the legal and escalation character of the same physical presence. The Kinmen patrols since 2024 are the case to watch.
Commercial shipping and insurance behaviour in the strait
The first place a change in perceived risk appears, and it appears before any political statement does.
