Notable history

The southern of the ROC Army's three standing corps, designated the Fourth Theatre of Operations in the reorganisation effective 1 January 2022. Its area contains the island's largest port and the southern end of the western coastal plain — the part of Taiwan's west coast that published landing analysis returns to most often, because it is where suitable beaches and the road network behind them coincide. The command also sits at the northern end of the Bashi Channel problem: the waters between southern Taiwan and Luzon are where the maritime and air approaches from the Philippine Sea converge, and they are the same waters the Philippine Northern Luzon Command looks north across.

Strengths

Covers the island's principal southern port and industrial region with a standing joint theatre command, and shares a theatre boundary with the naval and air structures whose main southern establishments lie in the same region.

Limitations

The same coastal geography that makes the area defensible in depth also makes it the part of Taiwan most frequently modelled as a landing area by outside analysts, and this module publishes no assessment of any such scenario.
