The semiconductor supply system
The most concentrated industrial dependency in the world economy, on an island that imports its inputs and its electricity fuel by sea.
Taiwan manufactures the large majority of the world's most advanced logic chips in a small geographic cluster that depends on imported materials, imported energy and continuous power. The concentration is the exposure, and it exists now rather than only in a contingency.
Overview
Advanced semiconductor manufacturing is concentrated in Taiwan to a degree with no parallel in any other critical industry. The most advanced process nodes are made almost entirely on the island, in a cluster running down the western plain through Hsinchu, Taichung and Tainan. The system is a flow, not a stock: it depends on imported specialty chemicals, gases, wafers and equipment, on a continuous and very high-quality electricity supply, and on air and sea freight to move product out. Capacity is being built elsewhere — in the United States, Japan and Europe — but leading-edge capability transfers slowly, and published assessments consistently describe the concentration as reducing over years rather than being resolved. Taiwan's own policy treats the cluster as a strategic asset, and its dependence on imported energy ties this system directly to the energy record alongside it.
Why it matters
This is why the Taiwan question is a global economic question rather than a regional political one. The concentration gives states with no position on sovereignty a direct material stake in the strait staying quiet, and it means disruption here would reach manufacturing sectors — automotive, consumer electronics, industrial, defence — with no connection to the dispute. It is also the clearest case in the module where a civilian industrial fact is simultaneously a deterrence variable, since the cluster's value to everyone is part of what makes the status quo stable.
What depends on it
Mutual and asymmetric. The world depends on Taiwan for advanced logic to a degree that cannot be substituted quickly; Taiwan depends on imported inputs, imported energy and open freight to run the cluster at all. Neither dependence is resolvable on a short timescale, and both are structural facts of the present rather than features of any scenario.
What disruption does
Interruption propagates outward faster and further than the sector's size suggests, because a missing component stops a finished product regardless of what that product is. The 2020–2023 shortage — which had nothing to do with the strait — is the available empirical evidence for how that propagation behaves. Within Taiwan, an interruption is an employment, tax-base and export-earnings event at national scale.

Alternatives and redundancy
Real but slow, and asymmetric in both directions. For customers, capacity in the United States, Japan and Europe is being built and is genuinely reducing the concentration at trailing and mid nodes; leading-edge substitution is the hard case and published assessments describe it in years. For Taiwan, input suppliers are diversified but several specialty materials and equipment categories have very few global sources of their own — so the cluster's own supply chain has concentration problems that mirror the one it creates.
Documented disruption history
A severe drought reduced water availability for fabrication, requiring trucked supply and priority allocation — a demonstration that the cluster's dependencies include utilities as mundane as water.
The global chip shortage, driven by pandemic demand shifts rather than by anything in the strait, which demonstrated how quickly a supply interruption in this sector propagates into unrelated industries.
Export controls on advanced semiconductor equipment and chips, which reorganised the industry's trade geography and made the cluster a subject of policy in several capitals at once.
Political implications
Gives many states a material interest in the status quo, which is part of the deterrence picture whether or not anyone intends it as such.

Both readings are held, and they imply opposite things about whether diversification improves stability.
