In brief
Taiwan's marine corps — a counter-landing and island-reinforcement force rather than an expeditionary one, which is the reverse of what the name usually implies.

Broad area of activity
Taiwan and its administered island groups, including Kinmen and Matsu
Notable history
A service arm of the ROC Navy rather than a separate service, and one whose mission inverted over the Cold War. Raised in the era when the declared purpose of the armed forces was to return to the mainland, it was an amphibious assault force; the mission it actually holds now is the opposite one — defeating a landing rather than making one, and reinforcing the offshore island groups whose garrisons cannot be quickly reinforced any other way. The distinction matters for reading the module: a marine corps in this system is a defensive capability, and its size is not evidence about anyone's intentions.
Strengths
Trained for the specific problem the island faces — contesting a landing at the point of contact — and one of the few parts of the force structure whose peacetime mission and wartime mission are genuinely the same thing.
Limitations
Reinforcing Kinmen or Matsu requires moving across waters routinely patrolled by the other side, which is a maritime and air problem the corps does not control. Its counter-landing role also sits inside the unresolved argument about Taiwanese doctrine: a force optimised to fight at the beach is the conventional answer, and the asymmetric school argues the fight should have been decided well before that. No strengths, dispositions or readiness are recorded.
Related locations
Kinmen: Published mission area only — the corps's stated responsibilities cover Taiwan and the administered island groups. No garrison, deployment or disposition is recorded. Matsu: Published mission area only, as above.
