Raised in the era when the declared purpose of the armed forces was to return to the mainland, it was an amphibious assault force; the mission it actually holds now is the opposite one — defeating a landing rather than making one, and reinforcing the offshore island groups whose garrisons cannot be quickly reinforced any other way.
