Notable history

Russian trainers relocated to Air Base 101 in May 2024, while American personnel were still present on the base; US forces completed their withdrawal from Niger on 15 September 2024. A high-level Russian defence delegation visited all three AES capitals in July 2025. On 28–29 January 2026, Islamic State's Sahel Province — reported alongside its West Africa Province — attacked Diori Hamani International Airport. Russia's Foreign Ministry stated that the attack "was repelled through the joint efforts of the Russian Ministry of Defence's African Corps and the Nigerien armed forces". Twenty attackers were killed, including a French national, at least eleven were captured, and four Nigerien soldiers were wounded. General Tiani subsequently visited the Russian base in person to express gratitude for the force's professionalism. This is the only officially confirmed Africa Corps engagement in this module. On 29–30 August 2026 mutinous Nigerien soldiers attacked the airport, the presidential palace, the state broadcaster and Base 101. Government forces retook the base. What Russian personnel did is not established.

Strengths

Position at the country's most sensitive military site, alongside the confederation's joint command; a publicly acknowledged combat contribution with the head of state's personal endorsement — political capital no other Sahel deployment has been given so explicitly.

Limitations

Force size, financing and command arrangements are not disclosed and no figure is published here. The August 2026 events are the sharper limitation: reporting attributes aerial and ground support to Africa Corps personnel during the mutiny, but no official statement from either government has been identified — a marked contrast with January, when Moscow spoke within days — and Russian personnel were themselves reportedly captured during the fighting. Two readings remain open and the evidence does not separate them: that Africa Corps chose to intervene on the government's side in an internal political contest, or that it defended its own base and people against an attack aimed at them. Those imply very different things about what this partnership is for. Vigil records both and adopts neither; a single official account would settle it.
