Africa Corps — Burkina Faso role
An instructor-scale Russian presence whose announced expansion collapsed — the smallest and least documented of the three Sahel deployments.
Broad area of activity
Reported at a base at Loumbila, north-east of Ouagadougou. No wider deployment geography is established.
Notable history
Russian Deputy Defence Minister Yunus-Bek Yevkurov was received in Ouagadougou in September 2023 for initial discussions on an Africa Corps deployment, and an initial contingent of about a hundred instructors arrived later that year. In mid-2024 it was made public that Africa Corps would replace Wagner in Burkina Faso, with a base at Loumbila and a stated plan to grow from 100 to 300 personnel. Those expansion plans are reported to have collapsed almost immediately, with a portion of the force recalled to Russia not long after arrival. A high-level Russian defence delegation visited all three AES capitals in July 2025.
Strengths
A low-cost presence that secures a political relationship without committing the resources Mali's deployment absorbs.
Limitations
Very small, and reported to have contracted rather than grown. Nothing in the public record attributes combat operations, casualties or civilian-harm cases to this contingent — an absence that reflects both its size and the thinness of reporting from Burkina Faso, and should not be read as a finding about its conduct either way. Burkina Faso's security effort rests overwhelmingly on its own mass mobilisation rather than on this partnership, which is the clearest structural difference from Mali.

An instructor and advisory relationship rather than a combat partnership. Nothing in the public record attributes joint operations to this contingent, which is the difference from the Malian deployment.
