Summary

Russia's presence in Burkina Faso is a training and advisory contingent of roughly a hundred personnel from late 2023 — an order of magnitude smaller than the Malian deployment. An announced expansion to three hundred is reported to have collapsed, and a portion of the force has been recalled to Russia. There is no documented combat record for the contingent comparable to Mali's, and no officially acknowledged engagement of the kind Moscow has stated for Niger. The relationship therefore sits at the low end of what the Russian offer has delivered in this region: it exists, it is small, it has not grown as announced, and it has not been shown to have changed the security situation of the state carrying the region's largest displacement crisis.

Why it matters

It is the counterweight to reading the Russian position as a single expanding regional presence. In the country with the worst security outcome of the three, the partnership is smallest and has contracted — which is evidence about the limits of what Moscow is able or willing to supply, and about how little the presence itself determines.
