Resolution 2790 extends UNIFIL for a final time

28 Aug 2025

What happened

The Security Council unanimously extends UNIFIL's mandate "for a final time" to 31 December 2026, after which the force ceases operations and withdraws within one year. It calls on Israel to withdraw north of the Blue Line, including from the five positions, and asks the Secretary-General for options for implementing 1701 after UNIFIL by 1 June 2026. The United States states this is the last extension it will support.

It sets a fixed end to the international presence south of the Litani with no successor decided, which makes 31 December 2026 the module's most consequential scheduled date on the Lebanon front. The Secretary-General's options letter of 1 June 2026 has not, as of October 2026, produced a Council decision.
