Security Council Resolution 242: land for peace

22 Nov 1967

What happened

The Security Council unanimously emphasises the inadmissibility of acquiring territory by war and calls for withdrawal of Israeli armed forces from territories occupied in the recent conflict, together with termination of all claims of belligerency and respect for every state's right to live within secure and recognised boundaries.

Resolution 242, reaffirmed by Resolution 338 after the 1973 war, is the reference text of the Egypt–Israel treaty, the Israel–Jordan treaty and the Oslo accords. Its English and French versions are read differently on how much territory withdrawal covers, and that ambiguity is part of the frame, not a footnote to it.
