Israel takes the Rafah crossing and the Philadelphi corridor

May 2024

What happened

Israeli forces take the Gaza side of the Rafah crossing in early May 2024 and complete control of the Philadelphi corridor along the Gaza–Egypt border by the end of the month. The crossing stays shut to people until February 2026.

For the first time since 2005 Israel controls Gaza's border with Egypt, which turned the Gaza–Sinai interface into an Israel–Egypt treaty question and made Israeli withdrawal from the corridor a recurring ceasefire term. Control of the southern edge of the Strip is part of what the October 2025 "Yellow Line" left with Israel.
