The Hamas-led attack on Israel — Key Events — Levant

What happened

Hamas-led armed groups break through the Gaza perimeter and attack Israeli communities, military posts and a music festival in southern Israel. Israeli figures put the dead at about 1,200 and the number taken hostage into Gaza at 251. Israel declares a state of war.

The attack ended the post-2007 Gaza arrangement and opened the war from which every current Gaza, Lebanon and regional instrument descends. Hostages held in Gaza were the central term of the January 2025 and October 2025 ceasefires; the last remains were recovered in January 2026.
