Key event

The Egypt–Israel peace treaty

26 Mar 1979

What happened

Following the 1978 Camp David accords, Egypt and Israel sign a peace treaty. Israel withdraws from Sinai by April 1982 under a security annex that limits forces in defined zones, verified by the Multinational Force and Observers. The Gaza Strip is not returned to Egypt.

Egypt's role in the system — mediator, guarantor and operator of the Rafah crossing — rests on this treaty and its security annex. Israel's control of the Philadelphi corridor since May 2024 and the deployment of forces on both sides of the Gaza–Sinai border are argued in the treaty's terms.
