In brief

The movement's missile and unmanned-aircraft component — ballistic and cruise missiles of Iranian lineage and domestic assembly, and the one-way attack drones fired at shipping, Saudi Arabia and Israel, organised as a specialised force rather than as an infantry army's artillery.

Broad area of activity

Yemen, with reach across the Red Sea, into Saudi Arabia and to Israel

Notable history

The Houthi missile and drone forces are what makes the movement different from every other non-state actor in the region: a specialised component fielding families of ballistic missiles, land-attack cruise missiles and one-way attack drones that reporting attributes to Iranian designs assembled and modified in Yemen. They fired into Saudi Arabia for years during the coalition war, struck shipping in the Red Sea from late 2023, and reached Israel repeatedly through 2024 and 2025. Their origin is the contested part: Iranian supply is documented, its scale is disputed, and the movement claims domestic production of systems whose lineage is plainly Iranian. This record carries no inventory, no launch sites and no ranges.

Strengths

Reach out of proportion to the movement's size, and a production and assembly base that has survived years of strikes.

Limitations

Dependence on external components that interdiction can reach, and a demonstrated vulnerability to the layered defences of the ships and states it fires at. No systems by count, sites or dispositions are recorded.
