Attritional. The Institute for the Study of War assesses Russian forces advanced or infiltrated into about 124 square kilometres in August 2026, a rate near four square kilometres a day, with assaults in the Pokrovsk and Kostiantynivka–Druzhkivka directions recorded on successive days without advance and Ukrainian counterattacks recorded on the same axes. No module-marker town has changed hands since the baseline events of 2025, no new axis has opened, and Russia's stated objective in the east — full control of Donetsk and Luhansk regions — is unmet. Both sides' casualty claims remain disputed and are not carried here.

Opened by the Watch & Activity monitoring expansion pass, which found the module monitored the strike campaigns, the interceptor supply, the manpower constraint and the negotiating track and not the ground war they all bear on. Baseline is the August 2026 assessed rate and the eastern campaign's condition as the campaign record states it.
Why it matters
The war is decided on this ground, and every other question in the module — manpower, interceptors, the strike campaigns, the negotiating track — is ultimately a question about whether the line moves. A campaign that advances four square kilometres a day at high cost is a different war from one in which a defended town falls or a counteroffensive regains a district, and the difference is what a reader returning weekly needs stated rather than implied by the news. The question therefore reads the independent monthly assessment and the named-settlement record, and refuses the daily claim, which is what both belligerents publish and neither independently confirms.
Why continued absence matters
A month at the recorded rate with no town changing hands is the attritional finding restated with evidence, and after two years in which each side's theory of victory has gone undemonstrated the run of such months is the measure the module publishes about the ground war.

01Test
Assessed monthly territorial change on independent mapping
The square-kilometre figure and daily rate the Institute for the Study of War or DeepState publishes for the month, read against the preceding months. A month is the unit; a day is noise.
02Test
A module-marker town changing hands
Pokrovsk, Kostiantynivka, Kupiansk, Kramatorsk, Sloviansk, Chasiv Yar or another published marker assessed on independent mapping as held by the other side, as distinct from a belligerent's claim of its capture.
03Test
A new axis of advance opened
Offensive operations assessed on a direction where none were recorded in the preceding quarter — Sumy, Kharkiv, Zaporizhzhia or elsewhere.
04Test
Ukrainian ground regained over a month
Net Ukrainian gains assessed over a whole month on independent mapping, as distinct from a local counterattack recorded within a week.
05Test
A Russian claim of a named city's capture confirmed independently
The claim is routine; the observable is its confirmation by mapping that depends on neither belligerent.
06Test
The winter rate against the summer rate
Whether the assessed monthly figure falls with the season, as it did in previous winters, or holds — read from the same series, never inferred.
What would change the assessment2 assessment-change conditions · qualitative, as the record states them
A module-marker town assessed on independent mapping as changing hands, or a month in which the assessed rate doubles or a new axis opens
Assessment effectmoves the reading from attrition to operational movement for the side that made it.
Two consecutive months of net Ukrainian gains assessed on independent mapping
Assessment effectreverses the direction the campaign has held since 2024.
What remains unknown
- The independent monthly figures are assessments from open sources; neither belligerent's general staff publishes a map, and Vigil publishes no unit positions of its own.
- Casualty exchange rates, which decide whether the attritional rate is sustainable, are disputed by both sides and carried nowhere in this module as a figure.
Readings the evidence also supports
- The rate reflects a Russian choice to hold force for a winter offensive rather than a limit on what the force can do, in which case the winter-tempo observable is the leading one and the summer rate measures intent rather than capacity.
Listed because the record's own assessment is not the only one its sources permit — not as a hedge on the assessment above.
