Notable history

Modernised substantially in the 1990s with the near-simultaneous acquisition of F-16s, Mirage 2000-5s and the indigenous Ching-kuo fighter — a three-type fleet that remains its structure today, now upgraded rather than replaced. Since the mid-2010s its most demanding routine task has not been combat but attrition management: responding to sustained PLA air activity that erodes airframe hours, fatigues crews and consumes readiness without a shot being fired.

Strengths

An upgraded and increasingly homogeneous fighter fleet with modern radar and missiles, extensive layered ground-based air and missile defence, and the accumulated experience of managing constant interception activity.

Limitations

Faces a far larger opposing air force; sustained grey-zone activity imposes a real and asymmetric maintenance and fatigue burden; and an air force operating from a small island has inherent basing constraints that drive its investment in dispersal, hardening and mobile systems. Vigil publishes no basing, dispersal or readiness detail.
