Notable history
One of the four commands the Air Force Command Headquarters publishes as its components, and the organisational answer to a question the module raises constantly: when analysis says "Taiwan's layered air and missile defence", this is the thing it is naming. The command consolidated air-defence artillery and surface-to-air missile functions that had previously been divided between services, which is why a capability most militaries hold in the army sits in the air force here. It operates both imported and indigenous layers — the Patriot family alongside the domestically developed Tien Kung series — and the warning picture that makes either useful depends on a long-range early-warning radar that has been operational since 2013 and publicly credited with detecting a ballistic launch in July 2026.
Strengths
A genuinely layered system combining imported and indigenous interceptors, fed by long-range early warning, under one command rather than split across services. The indigenous layer matters disproportionately: it is the part of the inventory whose expansion does not require a foreign export decision.
Limitations
Interceptor inventories are finite and the opposing missile inventory is not comparably constrained; every serious published treatment of this problem is a magazine-depth argument, and none of the figures involved are published by this module. Early warning from a small island is measured in minutes, and the single long-range radar that provides it is the most obvious first-night target in every scenario written about it — which is a structural observation made in public commentary, not an assessment made here.
