Battlefield role

Air defence and air policing, including the routine interception activity that constitutes Taiwan's day-to-day response to reported PLA air presence, plus anti-ship and standoff strike roles in a defensive concept.

Strengths

The V-standard upgrade brought a modern active electronically scanned array radar and current-generation missiles across most of the fleet, giving Taiwan a broadly homogeneous and capable fighter force. Deep US support, training and spares ecosystem behind it.

Limitations

A fourth-generation airframe facing an opponent operating low-observable types in growing numbers. More fundamentally, aircraft require runways, and an air force operating from a small island has inherent basing constraints — the principal argument made by advocates of shifting investment toward ground-based and mobile systems. Sustained interception activity imposes airframe hours and crew fatigue costs that fall asymmetrically on the smaller force.

Taiwan's air force publicly reports responding to PLA activity around the island on a near-daily basis.
