A single-engine fighter with a ventral intake under the nose, a bubble canopy and a single fin. The upgraded configuration is distinguished from earlier Taiwanese aircraft chiefly by the dielectric radar nose and by antenna fairings on the spine rather than by planform, so the two are hard to tell apart at a distance — a point worth remembering when reading photographs described as showing upgraded aircraft.

Taiwan's air force publicly reports responding to PLA activity around the island on a near-daily basis. Delivery of newly built Block 70 aircraft and the upgrade programme for existing airframes have both been publicly reported, with schedule slippage acknowledged. The first two of the 66 newly built Block 70 aircraft left the United States for Taiwan on 17 August 2026, according to sources cited by Taiwan's national news agency; the programme had been due to complete by the end of 2026. No basing, dispersal, readiness or sortie-rate information is published in this module.
