Notable history
One of the four commands the Air Force Command Headquarters says it is composed of, and the one that holds the flying forces. Its defining problem is not combat but tempo. Taiwan's defence ministry publishes daily counts of detected PLA aircraft, and the response to them — scrambles, interceptions, radar tracking — is generated here. That workload consumes airframe hours, crew currency and maintenance capacity continuously, at a rate set by the other side, and it is the clearest example in this module of a cost imposed without a shot being fired.
Strengths
An upgraded and increasingly homogeneous fighter fleet with modern radar and missiles, an airborne early-warning component that extends detection beyond the horizon, and several years of accumulated experience in managing sustained interception activity without escalation.
Limitations
Every structural constraint on this command is geographic: a small island has few airfields, they are all known, and the investment in dispersal, hardening and highway operations follows from that rather than from preference. Sustained grey-zone activity is asymmetric in cost, and the smaller force pays more per sortie flown. Vigil publishes no basing, dispersal, sortie-generation or readiness detail.

The median line ceases to function as a restraint
Following the August 2022 exercises, crossings of the Taiwan Strait median line by PLA aircraft become routine rather than exceptional, and Beijing publicly rejects the line's existence as a recognised limit. Taiwan's defence ministry continues to report crossings daily.
