The island and its eastern approaches
A mountain range down the middle, everyone living on one side of it, and deep ocean on the other.
Taiwan is a steep, densely populated island whose central range separates a crowded western plain from a narrow eastern coast dropping into deep ocean. That asymmetry shapes where people, ports and industry are, and makes the eastern side the module's principal access question.
Dominant terrain
A north–south central mountain range running most of the island's length, with peaks among the highest in East Asia, dropping steeply on the eastern side and giving way on the west to a broad alluvial plain. The plain carries almost the entire population, the major cities, the ports and the industry. The east is a narrow strip between mountains and sea, connected north–south by a small number of routes and to the west by a smaller number still.
Mobility implications
Internal movement is constrained by the range in a way that is unusual for an island of this size: west and east are effectively separate transport systems joined at a few points, and the eastern strip is long, thin and hard to reinforce along its own length. Externally, the shape means the western side faces the strait at short range while the eastern side faces open ocean — which is why the module treats eastern access as a distinct question rather than as the same problem from the other direction.
Seasonal constraints
Typhoons make landfall regularly, and the mountain terrain converts heavy rainfall into landslides that close routes and isolate eastern communities for days at a time. The north-east monsoon dominates winter. These are civil resilience facts before they are anything else: the island's emergency arrangements are built around them and are exercised annually because the weather requires it, not because of the political situation.
Water and natural barriers
The central range is the internal barrier. Externally the relevant waters are the strait to the west, the Bashi Channel and Luzon Strait to the south, the Miyako Strait and East China Sea approaches to the north, and the Philippine Sea to the east. The eastern approaches are deep water very close inshore, which is a materially different maritime environment from the shallow strait.
Urbanisation and settlement
Very high and very concentrated. Taipei anchors the north, Kaohsiung the south, with Taichung and Tainan on the western plain; Hualien and Taitung are the eastern population centres and are small by comparison. Any civil contingency is therefore a dense-urban problem on the west and an isolation problem on the east.

The concentration of advanced semiconductor manufacturing that gives this geography global economic consequence.
Broad operational significance
Three effects, and the third is the one usually missed. First, the population, economy and industry are concentrated on the side facing the strait, which means civil resilience and economic exposure are the same geographic problem. Second, the eastern side faces open ocean rather than a narrow strait, so questions about external access and resupply are questions about the Pacific approaches rather than about the strait — and those approaches are the reason regional basing geography matters to this module at all. Third, the island's own terrain and weather already impose an annual cycle of disruption, isolation and emergency response; the civil-resilience structures this module records exist because of typhoons and earthquakes first, and the political situation second.
Observed
Taiwan conducts annual civil-defence and disaster exercises built around typhoon, earthquake and landslide scenarios, and its emergency arrangements are exercised against those hazards routinely. Military activity is reported around the island rather than only in the strait, including in the eastern approaches and through the northern and southern channels.

The eastern side is the module's most consequential geography and the least discussed. Analysis that treats the strait as the whole problem misses that external access, resupply and the survivability of anything on the island are eastern questions — and that the same terrain which complicates access also makes the eastern strip hard to sustain from within.
