Ansarul Islam
The Burkinabè-origin jihadist movement that emerged in 2016 and was absorbed into JNIM — the vehicle through which the coalition became a Burkinabè and Nigerien organisation as well as a Malian one.

Notable history
Ansarul Islam emerged in Burkina Faso in late 2016 — the first substantial jihadist movement of Burkinabè origin — and was subsequently incorporated into JNIM, which is what allowed the coalition's expansion from northern Burkina Faso into south-western Niger and eastern Burkina Faso between 2017 and 2018. It is reported among the forces that encircled Djibo from February 2022, in the siege that has run for over four years. Its significance is structural rather than numerical: JNIM did not spread into Burkina Faso primarily by sending Malians, it absorbed a movement that was already there. That is why the coalition's geography cannot be described from any single country's evidence base.
Strengths
Local origin and constituency in the country where the insurgency has grown fastest; the autonomy that JNIM's coalition structure grants its components; tri-border geography that no single state's operations can bound.
Limitations
Reporting rarely separates its actions from JNIM's as a whole, so its own trajectory is difficult to trace. Vigil publishes no strength estimate for it, and attributes attacks to it only where a source does.

The encirclement of Djibo begins
Jihadist forces, primarily Ansarul Islam and JNIM, encircled the Soum provincial capital of Djibo in northern Burkina Faso, destroying infrastructure, mining the roads and ambushing supply convoys. Surrounding populations were forcibly relocated into the town, taking it from about 60,000 inhabitants to between 200,000 and 300,000, and about 370,000 by December 2022. From around May 2022 resupply depended chiefly on humanitarian airlift.
