- Historique notable
- Ansarul Islam emerged in Burkina Faso in late 2016 — the first substantial jihadist movement of Burkinabè origin — and was subsequently incorporated into JNIM, which is what allowed the coalition's expansion from northern Burkina Faso into south-western Niger and eastern Burkina Faso between 2017 and 2018. It is reported among the forces that encircled Djibo from February 2022, in the siege that has run for over four years. Its significance is structural rather than numerical: JNIM did not spread into Burkina Faso primarily by sending Malians, it absorbed a movement that was already there. That is why the coalition's geography cannot be described from any single country's evidence base.

L’encerclement de Djibo commence
Des forces djihadistes, principalement Ansarul Islam et le JNIM, ont encerclé Djibo, chef-lieu de la province du Soum dans le nord du Burkina Faso, détruisant les infrastructures, minant les routes et tendant des embuscades aux convois de ravitaillement. Les populations environnantes ont été déplacées de force vers la ville, dont la population est passée d’environ 60,000 habitants à entre 200,000 et 300,000, puis à environ 370,000 en décembre 2022. À partir de mai 2022 environ, le ravitaillement a dépendu principalement d’un pont aérien humanitaire.
