Resolution 1559 calls for the disarmament of all militias in Lebanon

2 Sep 2004

What happened

The Security Council (9–0, with six abstentions) calls for the withdrawal of all remaining foreign forces from Lebanon and the disbanding and disarmament of all Lebanese and non-Lebanese militias, and supports the extension of the Lebanese government's control over all its territory.

It is the text that makes Hezbollah's disarmament a whole-of-Lebanon obligation rather than a south-of-the-Litani one. Resolution 1701 incorporates it, the Secretary-General still reports on it twice a year, and the dispute over whether the 2024 cessation applies north of the Litani is a dispute about its reach.
