Key event

The June 1967 war: Israel takes the West Bank, East Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip

5 – 10 Jun 1967 Essential

What happened

In six days of war with Egypt, Jordan and Syria, Israel takes the Gaza Strip and Sinai from Egypt, the West Bank including East Jerusalem from Jordan, and the Golan Heights from Syria. Israel extends its law and administration to an enlarged East Jerusalem municipal area at the end of June 1967.

Every Palestinian territory this module covers has been under Israeli control, in some form, since this war. The UN and the ICJ describe the West Bank, East Jerusalem and Gaza as occupied Palestinian territory; Israel disputes that characterisation. The Golan, taken in the same war, is Syria's record in Vigil and is not authored here.
