Israel withdraws from southern Lebanon to the Blue Line

24 May 2000 (line confirmed Jun 2000) Essential

What happened

Israel withdraws its forces from southern Lebanon and the South Lebanon Army collapses. The UN identifies a line of withdrawal — the Blue Line — and in June 2000 the Secretary-General reports that Israel has withdrawn in compliance with Resolution 425. Lebanon disputes the line at several points, and Lebanon claims the Shebaa Farms, which the UN treats as part of the Israeli-occupied Golan.

The Blue Line is the reference line of 1701, the 2024 cessation and the 2026 framework, and it is a withdrawal line, not an agreed border. The disputed points and the Shebaa Farms are why "border demarcation" recurs in every Israel–Lebanon negotiation, and why Hezbollah could claim a continuing reason to keep its arms after 2000.
