Israel invades Lebanon and the PLO leaves Beirut

6 Jun 1982 (PLO evacuation Aug – Sep 1982)

What happened

Israel invades Lebanon and reaches Beirut. Under a US-brokered arrangement the PLO leadership and fighters are evacuated from Beirut in August 1982, and the PLO's headquarters moves to Tunis.

The war removed the PLO from the Israel–Lebanon front and, in the same years, created the conditions for the organisation that replaced it there. Hezbollah's emergence, a two-decade Israeli presence in southern Lebanon and the PLO's later turn to negotiation all start from 1982.
