Key event

Israel declares independence as the British Mandate ends, and the 1948 war follows

14 May 1948 (war Nov 1947 – 1949)

What happened

After the UN General Assembly recommends partition of Mandatory Palestine in Resolution 181 (29 November 1947), fighting begins between the communities. Israel declares independence on 14 May 1948, the Mandate ends, and the armies of neighbouring Arab states enter the war. Several hundred thousand Palestinian Arabs are displaced from the territory that becomes Israel.

The state, the refugee question and the territorial division that every later instrument refers back to date from this war. No Palestinian state was established; Gaza came under Egyptian administration and the West Bank and East Jerusalem under Jordanian rule, which is why 1949, not 1947, drew the lines that still matter.
