Broad area of activity

Israel and, by long-range strike, Iran

Notable history

Israel is a belligerent in this system rather than a bystander to it, and it has been since June 2025. The IDF conducted the opening strike of the twelve-day war, which killed the chief of the Armed Forces General Staff, the Revolutionary Guard's commander-in-chief and the entire senior leadership of the Guard's Aerospace Force. It conducted the opening strike of the current war on 28 February 2026, in which Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei was killed. Israeli strikes through the war have concentrated on the Iranian regime and its security institutions rather than on the energy and maritime system that is this module's main subject — a different emphasis from the American campaign, conducted in parallel with it.

Strengths

Demonstrated ability to strike at extreme range against a defended state, and an intelligence performance against Iranian leadership that has no obvious precedent. It is a single unified military, which spares it the coordination problem that defines the force it is fighting.

Limitations

Israel and the United States are described here as parallel belligerents, not as a joint command: this module has found no evidence of an integrated operational hierarchy, a combined targeting cell or a shared chain of command, and asserting one would be an inference rather than a finding. Its campaign is also the harder one to source, because Israel publishes less about it than CENTCOM does. Nothing here describes forces, basing, deployments, holdings or how any strike was carried out.

  • The 2026 interstate war Primary force · Since 28 February 2026 · moderate confidence · as of 2026-09

A co-belligerent from the opening day; CRS attributes the killing of Ali Khamenei to Israel. The source names the state, not a service, so the organisational identification is Vigil's. No joint command, shared target selection or unified planning with the United States is asserted anywhere in this module — none is established.

  • The twelve-day war, June 2025 Primary force · 13 – 24 June 2025 · moderate confidence · as of 2025-06

The source names Israel; the organisational identification is Vigil's.

United States and Israeli strikes on Iran open the war

A large-scale United States and Israeli strike campaign against Iran begins. The Congressional Research Service records more than ten thousand targets struck in Iran by 25 March, and reports the operation's cost as exceeding $11.3bn in its first six days — a figure it notes excludes many associated costs. Iranian retaliation against Israel, United States facilities and Gulf states begins the same day.
