In brief

The second of Armenia's two services, holding both the small combat air arm — four Su-30SM fighters and Su-25 attack aircraft — and the ground-based air defence whose density the 2020 war exposed, now being rebuilt with Indian Akash and French radars beside the surviving Russian systems.

Notable history

Armenia's air arm has always been small — Su-25 attack aircraft from the Soviet inheritance and four Su-30SM fighters bought from Russia in 2019 — and its air defence was the Soviet layered model of S-300, Tor, Osa and older systems. The 2020 war was fought largely against that defence: Azerbaijani loitering munitions and drones found and destroyed radars and launchers whose losses were documented publicly, and the air arm played almost no part. The service since then is the clearest case of the post-2020 reform in practice: Indian Akash medium-range systems delivered from November 2024 as the first export of the type, French radars, and a stated prioritisation of air defence and unmanned systems as long-term projects. This module records the direction as stated and the deliveries as reported, and assesses no current capability.

Strengths

Supplier diversification that the 2020 defeat forced and that India and France have answered; a survivable short-range layer; and a lesson learned at the highest possible cost about what a drone-era air defence must be.

Limitations

Four fighters, a Russian-dependent fleet whose support is politically uncertain, and a rebuild whose delivery cannot be assessed from outside and has not been tested. No sites, holdings by count, coverage or readiness are published.

Reported & historical equipment associations

S-300 family (Caucasus legacy): The long-range air defence of 2020, with components documented destroyed.

Second Nagorno-Karabakh War

Azerbaijan launches a full offensive and wins in 44 days — Turkish Bayraktar TB2 drones, Israeli loitering munitions and artillery mass against entrenched Armenian defences, culminating in the fall of Shusha (Shushi). Several thousand die on each side; Azerbaijan recovers the seven surrounding districts and part of the former NKAO.
