- Notable history
- Armenia's border troops belong to the National Security Service rather than to the armed forces, on the Soviet pattern, and for three decades they did not guard the frontier alone: under a 1992 agreement Russian border troops watched the Turkish and Iranian borders and the airport beside them. That arrangement ended checkpoint by checkpoint — Zvartnots airport in August 2024, the Iranian crossing from January 2025, Margara from March 2025 and Akhurik from the start of 2026 — and its ending is the clearest completed structural marker of Armenia's security realignment. The border troops are now the institution at every crossing, including the Syunik frontier with Azerbaijan that was not a border at all before 2020 and on which the EU mission's observers have patrolled since 2023.
- Strengths
- Sole authority at its own frontier for the first time since independence, and an international monitoring presence beside it on the sector that matters most.
- Limitations
- A force that has taken over duties a larger neighbour's troops performed for thirty years, on a southern frontier that is undelimited and contested, with a delimitation process that has reached only the Tavush sector. No strength, posts or dispositions are published.

The European Union's civilian monitoring mission in Armenia, established by the Council in January 2023 after the September 2022 fighting, begins operations on the Armenian side of the border with Azerbaijan on 20 February 2023 — unarmed observers reporting on the security situation and supporting confidence-building, from a headquarters in Yerevan and bases in the border provinces.
