The EU Mission in Armenia begins work on the border

The European Union's civilian monitoring mission in Armenia, established by the Council in January 2023 after the September 2022 fighting, begins operations on the Armenian side of the border with Azerbaijan on 20 February 2023 — unarmed observers reporting on the security situation and supporting confidence-building, from a headquarters in Yerevan and bases in the border provinces.

Why it mattersThe first international presence on a frontier that had not been one in practice for thirty years, and — once the Russian border-troop arrangement ended checkpoint by checkpoint from 2024 — the only one. Its mandate has since been extended to February 2027, and Baku's objection to it is a standing feature of the normalisation track.
