The Karabakh highlands

It contains no coordinates, routes, approach axes or defensive positions — the schema has no fields for them — and every place named below is already published as a map marker in this module.

The Karabakh highlands

High, broken, forested ground reached through a handful of valleys — terrain that made a small force defensible for thirty years and then did not.

In short

A forested mountain block rising above the surrounding lowlands, historically accessible through a small number of valley routes. The ground favoured a defender for three decades until drones removed the concealment on which that advantage rested.

Dominant terrain

Mountain and upland forest, cut by deep valleys and rising sharply from the Kura–Aras lowlands to the east. Settlement is concentrated in the valleys and on a few upland plateaus; the higher ground is wooded and largely empty. The contrast with the ground to the east is abrupt — the transition from open agricultural lowland to broken forested upland happens over a short distance, which is the single most consequential geographic fact about the territory.

Mobility implications

Movement into and through the highlands concentrates on a small number of valley routes and passes, and off them is slow and difficult for anything mechanised. Historically that produced a defensive advantage out of proportion to the forces involved: an attacker had to use known approaches, and the forest concealed a defender who did not. What changed after 2016 and decisively in 2020 was observation rather than movement — persistent aerial surveillance removed the concealment while leaving the constrained approaches in place, which converted the terrain's advantage into a liability.

Seasonal constraints

Winter closes the higher passes and makes upland movement impractical for extended periods; spring thaw compounds it. The 2020 fighting concluded in November as winter set in, and the seasonal window has shaped the timing of most activity in the territory's history. Snow and cloud also historically limited aerial observation, which is a smaller factor than it was.

Water and natural barriers

The mountain block itself is the barrier. The Kura and Aras river systems frame it to the east and south; within the highlands the significant obstacles are the valley walls rather than the watercourses. There is no navigable water and no natural corridor through the massif — which is why the connection to Armenia was always a specific road rather than a general approach.

Urbanisation and settlement

Sparse and concentrated. Khankendi (Stepanakert) was the principal centre; Shusha sits on high ground above it, which is why its capture in November 2020 was treated by both parties as decisive. Aghdam, on the lowland edge, was destroyed in the first war and stood empty for nearly three decades — the clearest physical record in the region of what the conflict did to the places it was fought over.

Where movement concentrates

Named only where this module already publishes the place as a map marker, so this section adds no geographic precision of its own.

  • Shusha / Shushi Historical site

    High ground overlooking the territory's principal centre and the road to it. Its capture in November 2020 ended the war within days, which is the clearest demonstration of what this terrain rewards.

  • Stepanakert / Khankendi Major city

    The territory's administrative and population centre, and the point every route into the highlands ultimately serves.

  • Lachin corridor (legacy) Corridor · supply & trade artery

    The single road connection to Armenia. Its existence as a specific, nameable corridor rather than a general approach is a consequence of the terrain, and its 2022–23 closure is what made the position untenable.

  • Aghdam Historical site

    The lowland edge where the highlands meet the plain, and the physical record of the first war's destruction.

Broad operational significance

Three effects, and the third explains the whole arc. First, the ground is genuinely defensible: constrained approaches, forest cover and high ground gave a small force an advantage that held the 1994 lines for twenty-six years against a materially stronger opponent. Second, because access to Armenia depended on one road rather than on a broad frontier, the territory's viability was always contingent on a corridor that could be closed — which is what happened between December 2022 and September 2023, and which made the final operation short. Third, the terrain's defensive advantage rested on concealment, and persistent aerial observation removed it: the 2020 war is the clearest available case of a defensive geography being devalued by a change in surveillance rather than by any change in the ground.

Observed

Armenian forces held the highlands and surrounding districts from 1994 to 2020. Azerbaijan recovered the surrounding lowlands and Shusha in the forty-four-day war of 2020, after which a corridor connected the remaining Armenian-populated area to Armenia. The corridor was blockaded from December 2022, and a one-day operation in September 2023 ended organised resistance. The territory has been under Azerbaijani control since.

Assessed

Reading the 2020 and 2023 outcomes as simply the result of better equipment understates the terrain's role in both directions. The same ground that made the position defensible for a generation also made it dependent on a single road — and a defence built around concealment was always going to be vulnerable to the specific technological change that arrived.

  • Independent access to the territory for survey and assessment has been limited, so damage, heritage and contamination assessments rest on partial observation.
  • Mine contamination is estimated rather than surveyed across much of the area, and clearance timelines vary widely between published assessments.
