The pause ended on schedule. Russia's three-day order against strikes on Kyiv and Ukraine's reciprocal restraint on Moscow covered 5–8 September 2026, the duration of the envoys' visits, and nothing else: drone and missile activity elsewhere continued through it, Ukraine's proposal of a wider three-day ceasefire was not accepted, and no text records what was agreed. The deep-strike campaign resumed with the envoys' departure. On 30 August Russia's defence ministry had announced preparation of large strikes on Ukrainian energy infrastructure, framed as retaliation. No restraint of any kind is in force as of this date.

Why it matters
A pause is the cheapest unit of de-escalation and the only one the two sides have so far agreed, which makes it the right thing to keep under review: whether the form recurs, widens, lengthens or acquires a text is evidence about the negotiating track that no statement of position provides. The two capitals are also where each side's strikes are most legible to a mediator, so a strike on either after a declared restraint is a fact about the restraint, not about the campaign. The winter energy campaign runs beside this question, not inside it — a pause on Kyiv that leaves substations open is exactly the shape the September precedent set.
