- Terrain dominant
- Varied and, crucially, ordinary. The South Ossetian line runs largely through agricultural lowland and foothills north of Gori, across farmland, orchards and villages. The Abkhaz line follows the Enguri river for much of its length, which gives it a natural feature the other lacks. Neither line follows terrain that would have suggested a boundary: they follow Soviet-era internal administrative divisions that were never intended to separate anything.
- Implications pour la mobilité
- Movement across the lines is restricted to a small and shrinking number of crossing points, several of which have been closed for extended periods. For residents this is the terrain's defining characteristic: land, relatives, cemeteries, medical care and pension payments are frequently on the other side of a line that did not exist within living memory, and reaching them depends on whether a specific crossing is open. Along the lines themselves, physical demarcation — fencing, signage and markers — has progressed since 2008 and has in places placed individual properties and fields on the opposite side.
- Contraintes saisonnières
- Agricultural cycles matter more than weather. Planting and harvest bring farmers to fields near and sometimes across the line, and detentions have followed that pattern. Winter closures of higher crossing points compound the isolation of communities that already depend on a small number of routes.
- Eau et obstacles naturels
- The Enguri river forms much of the Abkhaz line and the Enguri dam sits on it — a Soviet-era hydroelectric facility whose generating capacity and distribution span both sides and which has continued to operate under practical arrangements throughout. It is the clearest case in the module of infrastructure that ignores a political line because it was built before one existed.
- Urbanisation et peuplement
- Villages and small towns on both sides, with Gori the significant Georgian-controlled centre near the South Ossetian line and Tskhinvali and Sukhumi the de facto capitals. The 2008 fighting reached Gori, and the displacement it produced has not been reversed.
Portée opérationnelle générale
Three effects, and none of them is military. First, because the lines follow administrative divisions rather than terrain, they cut through functioning communities and infrastructure — which is why the practical disputes concern fields, water, roads and access to services rather than positions. Second, physical marking since 2008 has been incremental and has repeatedly moved specific properties across the line, with no mechanism available to residents to contest it. It is not demarcation, which presupposes an agreed line: these lines were never bilaterally delimited, and marking them unilaterally is what this module and the monitoring mission call borderisation. Third, the monitoring mission is mandated for the whole of Georgia and has been refused entry to both territories since it deployed, so the documented record of what happens along these lines is systematically one-sided — not through bias, and not by the mission's own choice, but because the de facto authorities have never granted access.
Observé
No fighting has occurred along either line since August 2008. Unilateral marking — fencing and marker placement — has continued and is documented by the EU monitoring mission. Crossing points have been closed and reopened, particularly on the Abkhaz line, with documented consequences for access to medical care and pensions. Detentions of people crossing or near the lines recur and have occasionally been fatal. The Enguri facility has continued to operate throughout.
Évalué
Describing these lines as a frozen conflict is accurate about the status question and misleading about daily life. The status has not moved in eighteen years; the lines themselves have, repeatedly and in small increments, and each increment has affected identifiable people. The file's real content is administrative, and analysis that looks only at the status question misses everything that actually changes.

- Conditions inside Abkhazia and South Ossetia are poorly observed and reported inconsistently.
- Terminology for these lines differs between the parties — Georgia refers to occupation lines, Russia and the de facto authorities to state borders, and international monitoring to administrative boundary lines. This record uses the third and notes the disagreement rather than adopting a position.
- Displacement figures from the 1990s and 2008 are compiled on differing bases and are contested.
