Ce qu’est ce système
Azerbaijani oil and gas reach Turkish and European markets through pipelines crossing Georgia — the only significant Caspian export route avoiding both Russia and Iran. That geography is why Georgia's stability and the region's security arrangements matter well beyond the Caucasus.
This system is the main reason the Caucasus is not a peripheral file. It ties the region's stability to European energy security, gives three governments a shared and durable interest in the corridor functioning, and explains why Georgian domestic developments draw European attention disproportionate to the country's size. It also explains part of the diplomacy: Azerbaijan's ability to conduct an independent policy rests substantially on the standing this corridor gives it, and Armenia's exclusion from it is one of the clearest material expressions of its regional position.

Le système
- Vue d’ensemble
- Azerbaijani hydrocarbons move west along a corridor built specifically to avoid Russian and Iranian territory. The Baku–Tbilisi–Ceyhan oil pipeline opened in 2006, running from the Caspian across Georgia to the Turkish Mediterranean coast; a parallel gas route carries Shah Deniz production to Türkiye and onward through the Southern Gas Corridor to European markets. The system's defining feature is political rather than technical: there is no engineering reason the route runs where it does, and every alternative would cross a country the participants chose to avoid. It made Georgia strategically consequential to states with no other interest in it, gave Azerbaijan standing in Brussels that predates and outlasts the Karabakh file, and gave Türkiye a transit position it retains regardless of regional politics. European demand grew after 2022 as buyers sought non-Russian supply, which raised the corridor's significance again.
- Ce qui en dépend
- Asymmetric and mutual. Azerbaijan depends on Georgian transit for its westward exports — there is no alternative that does not cross Russia or Iran. Georgia depends on the transit fees, the investment and above all the strategic attention the corridor brings. European buyers depend on it for a modest but politically significant share of non-Russian gas. Armenia is entirely outside the system, which is a structural fact about its economy rather than a temporary exclusion.
- Effets d’une perturbation
- Interruption reaches three parties differently. Azerbaijan loses export revenue with no substitute route consistent with its policy; Georgia loses transit income and, more importantly, the strategic attention that comes with it; European buyers lose a politically significant rather than quantitatively critical volume. The 2008 interruption is the empirical case, and its main consequence was analytical: it established that the corridor's risk is the transit state's stability, not the pipeline itself.
- Alternatives et redondance
- Real for the region, negligible for Azerbaijan's westward exports. Caspian production can and does move north through Russia and south through Iran under other commercial arrangements, but those are precisely the routes the western corridor exists to avoid, and using them would forfeit the political value the corridor provides. For European buyers the alternative is any other non-Russian supplier, which is why the corridor's significance is political and marginal rather than existential. For Armenia there is no alternative, because there is no participation.
In this systemThe Caspian production and export origin. Recorded as the module's published capital marker, not as a facility.
Why it mattersBaku holds the region's strongest hand: military victory consolidated, energy exports Europe now courts, the Middle Corridor's Caspian gateway, and a peace process it can pace through preconditions. What Baku chooses to do with that position — sign, wait, or press — is the region's largest single variable.
What to watchTreaty signature timing and preconditions; corridor negotiations; energy and transit deals; the handling of detained former Karabakh officials.

In this systemThe module's published corridor marker for the westward pipeline route as a whole.
Why it mattersThis belt is why the Caucasus has a Western stake: the only major Caspian export route that bypasses both Russia and Iran. It set the region's economic alignments in 2006 and gained importance after 2022 as Europe cut Russian supply. Its geography — skirting the 2008 war zone, crossing Georgia's political turbulence — makes its security inseparable from the region's conflicts.
What to watchThroughput and expansion decisions; EU–Azerbaijan gas negotiations; transit-fee and route politics in Georgia; declared threats against export infrastructure in any escalation.

Georgia's capital — the centre of the region's sharpest political contest between a European path and accommodation with Moscow, and the hub every east–west corridor passes through.
In this systemGeorgia is the transit state; the capital stands for the country's role rather than for any point on the route.
Why it mattersTbilisi's direction decides more than Georgia's: the BTC and gas pipelines, the Middle Corridor rail, and the Black Sea ports all depend on a state whose EU accession froze in 2024 amid protests, a disputed election and Western sanctions on ruling-party figures. A transit country's politics are everyone's supply chain.
What to watchProtest cycles and their policing; election and legitimacy disputes; EU process signals; treatment of opposition and media; relations with Moscow short of recognition-of-entities red lines.

In this systemBlack Sea outlet, and part of the wider export picture alongside the pipeline route.
Why it mattersBatumi is one of the two maritime exits for everything the Middle Corridor carries across Georgia, and a barometer city: Russian visitors and capital flowed in after 2022, while the port's throughput ties Georgian revenue to corridor politics. Adjara's own history — a 2004 standoff ended Tbilisi's way — makes it a marker of central authority as well.
What to watchPort throughput and expansion; ferry services across the Black Sea; the scale and politics of the Russian economic presence.

In this systemIncluded as the published marker for the closed border — the reason no route runs through Armenia and the clearest single expression of its exclusion.
Why it mattersThe closed border is the physical form of Armenia's isolation and of the genocide's unresolved shadow over Armenian–Turkish relations. Normalisation talks since 2021 have produced gestures (crossings for third-country nationals, diplomatic contacts) but no opening; Ankara ties the border to the Armenia–Azerbaijan settlement, making it a dependent variable of the peace process.
What to watchCrossing-point openings and their scope; sequencing statements from Ankara; rail rehabilitation on the Gyumri–Kars axis.

During the Russia–Georgia war, flows through the corridor were interrupted and the route's vulnerability to a conflict in the transit state became the central argument in every subsequent assessment of it.
European demand for non-Russian gas rose sharply after the invasion of Ukraine, increasing the political weight of Southern Gas Corridor volumes well beyond their share of supply.
Periodic technical interruptions and maintenance, publicly reported by operators. Recorded to note that interruption is routine and is not by itself a security signal.
Implications politiques
Gives European capitals a direct stake in Georgian stability and Azerbaijani cooperation, independent of any position on the region's conflicts.
Implications militaires
The corridor's security is the reason regional stability is treated as a European interest rather than a local one.
Implications économiques
Provides Azerbaijan's principal export earnings route and Georgia's most strategically valuable economic asset.

Ce qui reste inconnu
- Segment capacities, pumping infrastructure and security arrangements are deliberately not published by this module and are not the basis of any claim here.
- Commercial terms of transit agreements are confidential and are described only in outline.
- Azerbaijani reserve and production-decline estimates vary between published sources and are contested.
Lectures que les éléments permettent aussi
- European interest in the corridor can be read as energy-security diversification, or as a political preference for supporting routes that reduce Russian leverage regardless of volume. Both are stated by European officials at different times and the volumes involved support the second reading more than the first.
- Georgia's strategic value can be attributed to the corridor, or to its position on the Middle Corridor and as Armenia's outlet — which are separate systems with the same transit state. Attributing all of Georgia's importance to the pipelines overstates one of three overlapping reasons.
Published by operators and the Commission. Volumes matter less than whether expansion commitments are actually funded.
Stabilité politique de la Géorgie
The corridor's principal risk is the transit state, as 2008 demonstrated. Domestic crisis is the relevant indicator, not any military development.
Contrats européens pour l’expansion
Announced expansion has repeatedly outrun financed expansion. Contracts are the meaningful figure.
Armenia's exclusion is structural rather than technical. Any change would be a major signal about regional normalisation.
