Zone d’activité générale: South Ossetia, an entity of some tens of thousands of people around Tskhinvali. Nothing about dispositions is authored.
Historique notable: Formed in the 1991–92 war and preserved through the 1992 Sochi ceasefire under a joint peacekeeping arrangement that Georgia, Russia and the de facto side all sat in. The 2008 war ended that arrangement; Russia recognised the entity, stationed the 4th Military Base under a bilateral treaty, and in 2015 signed a treaty of alliance and integration under which elements of the South Ossetian force were to be incorporated into Russian structures. The de facto authorities have periodically raised joining the Russian Federation outright. In May 2026 the two signed a treaty of deepened integration that the module records as moving the structures toward formal openness to Russian personnel — the reason mainstream description now uses the phrase "annexation in all but name", and the reason the module's Georgia finding is that the two entities are not the same case.
Points forts: A guarantor whose garrison outnumbers the entity's own forces, and a boundary line whose "borderisation" the Russian side conducts.
Limites: Too small to constitute a force in its own right; dependent on Russia for every function above policing; and, after the 2026 treaty, less a structure of the entity than a component of its guarantor's. Vigil grades the record low for the same reason it grades Abkhazia's: no independent account of order or command exists.
