- Georgia's international frontiers — the Upper Lars crossing to Russia, the Armenian, Azerbaijani and Turkish borders, the Black Sea coast — and, on the Georgian side, the boundary lines with Abkhazia and South Ossetia.
- Historique notable
- Reorganised as a police body under the Interior Ministry in the reforms after 2004, replacing a border guard that had been a military service. The 2008 war left it as the Georgian organ facing two lines it does not recognise as borders: the Enguri crossing to Abkhazia and the line around South Ossetia, where the Russian side's "borderisation" — fences, trenches, signs — has advanced by increments since 2011 and where the EU monitoring mission's incident-prevention mechanism records detentions on both sides. In practice the agency polices those lines as boundaries while Georgian law treats them as occupation lines, and that gap is the institutional form of the module's Georgia finding.
- Points forts
- A reformed, funded agency with three decades of Western training, the hotline relationship with the EU mission, and the one crossing to Russia that the region's north–south trade depends on.
- Limites
- It faces Russian border troops and de facto structures across lines it cannot lawfully treat as borders, and the boundary moves without it. The 2024–26 rupture with Brussels leaves the EU mission's future — and the incident mechanisms this agency works through — an open question.
