Broad area of activity
Peacetime: the Primorye region on the Chinese border, from Ussuriysk. Wartime: the southern Donetsk axis — Vuhledar in 2022–23, Kurakhove in 2024 — by ISW's tracking. No disposition is authored.
Notable history
A Soviet field army of the Far East, kept after 1991 as the Primorye command facing China and moved west in 2022 for a war on the other side of the continent. Its brigades were committed on the southern Donetsk axis, where a tank brigade took part in the Vuhledar assaults that became the war's most filmed armoured losses, and remained on that axis through the slow advance of 2024 that ended at Kurakhove — a capture for which the Defence Minister publicly commended the army's brigades. It is the district's only army carried in this module and the clearest case of a peacetime formation used as a source of units for a distant front.
Strengths
A standing army headquarters with its own artillery, and by 2024 two years on one axis, which produced the positional knowledge behind the Kurakhove advance.
Limitations
Fights further from home than any formation in this atlas; was rebuilt after Vuhledar with mobilised manpower; and the peacetime tree here is not the wartime grouping. Nothing below the army is authored.
